No obligation & free
Funerals can be expensive, and it is important to know how these costs are going to be paid for, and whether you are entitled to receive any help.
Check the Will to see who the executor is and if any financial provision has been made for the funeral.
Check if there were any pre-paid funeral plans, insurance policies, pension schemes or bank/building society accounts. Banks and building society accounts will be frozen, but may release up to £5000 to cover the cost of a funeral on production of a death certificate, although not obliged to.
Some employers pension schemes pay a lump sum to help with the funeral costs.
If money is not available until probate is granted, you or the executor may need to pay and then be reimbursed from the estate later. This can take some time and you should evaluate your options carefully.

Alternative sources of funeral finance: Crowdfunding
An alternative and growing trend for families and individuals who do not have enough cash to pay for the funeral can seek to set up a crowdfunding page on either JustGiving or GoFundMe. Although this is a fairly new method to pay for a funeral, technology has transformed social connections through platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram & Snap. When seeking to raise cash for a lost loved one through crowdfunding, we have seen that online friends often like to contribute to the funeral as there way of saying goodbye and ensuring their friends send off is fitting and not compromised.
